The t40 is a fine machine. If you just do Office and Act! on the thing then yeah, it beats...

Actually the 9600 is way better than the 9000. The amount of memory has nothing to do with it.

It has a way higher fill rate and can push lots more triangles. Each generation has a bit better...

Try recreating the crash with one stick of RAM. Try each stick by itself. It might be bad RAM.

You are correct. Apple uses questionable benchmarking IMO. Current P4/9800P conditions are getting 360+ fps in Quake 3 at 10*7 highest detail. The 2xG5/9800 combo gets 270fps.
