Must have something to do with Airport Basestation talking to the modem.
It seems that removing the powercords from both modem and Airport Express for a few minutes did it for me.

This solved the problem temporarily but after a while the problems came back.

DisplayConfig did the trick, 1280x720 worked out of the box...
It's just a tad bit fuzzy if your up close but no doubt the tweaking options in the program will take care of that.
