Upgrading the RAM is less expensive. I got the G.Skill 4 GB kit from NewEgg for $50. Great deal, very little performance...

As for the swollen battery problem, I think the recall from last summer is the best indication that a LOT of work needs...

It's probably the logic board. The bummer is that a lot of those older laptops won't boot without a modem on the board. I don't know if the Lombard is one of them, but it's worth a shot swapping...

That icon usually means the OS is hosed, or there is a hardware problem and the OS refuses to boot because of it. First, try booting in verbose mode (Cmd-V) and see if it gives you any error...

Remember that AppleCare doesn't cover liquid spills, and if the liquid spill does cause something to go out later on, AppleCare is worthless in that case.
