From what I read, the symbol should be only used on hardware to show that is has firewire and should not be altered in anyway. He might be violating one of those but what are they going to do?

If I remember correctly it is due to the video card malfunctioning. Apple would repair it most likely if you pay them the cash I think.

The MBP's use a different GPU card and I have not heard of...

Using it right now with my iMac G5. Resetting PRAM changes it back to mirror only. So when you zap PRAM you need to redo the screen spanning doctor.
