I don't know about the cracking, but the clicking is your hard drive. Not much you can do about that, replacing the hard drive in a pismo is not particularly easy.

I can't comment on the new powerbooks, but I have a 15'' alubook with the 1Ghz processor and the fans almost never come on. They only come on when I'm playing a game or batch processing in photoshop...
