I just bumped up my system to 2GB and I can notice a difference in speed just doing the normal day to day stuff. Programs seem to open a little faster, scrolling in Safari seems faster etc etc.

I took a look to see if you can get into these drives. It appears you should be able to from the bottom but I didn't want to take off one of the large rubber feet which are glued on to the bottom...
