I know for a fact that whenever I heard the fan on my Mac Pro it was the x1900. I upgraded the fan on it with one of those Accelero things and it's much much quieter.

The window you posted a screenshot of is normal no matter what CPU you have.

I may test this by installing the default 10.4.9 on an external disk then...

I'm guessing the memory states are more to do with RAM than CPU (hence the name) since with 30, the test took just over 2 minutes to complete on the 8-core. He has twice the RAM as me, don't forget.
