I was wondering, if I were to purchase a Hard Drive on Newegg, it would obviously come without the Hard disk noise dampener. My question is, will it affect the noise level of my MacBook Pro if I were to install a Hard Drive from Newegg that lacks the hard disk noise dampener metal disk?

"For starters, the new MacBook Pro ships with hard drives the come with a metal disk attached to their top cover to dampen hard drive noise. The disk is not removable, meaning replacement drives will need to be ordered directly from Apple until a third-party solution is developed and deployed."

I don't know about any noise dampeners but I purchased a drive from newegg (hitachi 320gb) and its not too loud, actually I'm don't think its any louder then the stock one. To be honest, I hadn't heard about apple using noise dampeners for their laptops.

I'm not sure if this post helps, but unless you need a super quiet drive, I'd not really worry about it. The noise from current generation laptop HDs are such that you'll barely notice them.

You could put a small piece of felt or similar there.

I replaced a Toshiba hard drive on my (now donated) Powerbook G4 for a new Hitachi... the Toshiba is very quiet, and the Hitachi is extremely quiet (and I've never had a problem with this company either).I can't imagine one needing further noise isolation. If anything, I would suspect that the fan would make more noise.

I don't know anything about the noise dampener, but I do know that the Hitachi Travelstar 250GB drive that I replaced my stock Fujitsu with is much noisier, though over 6 months or so I have gotten used to it.
