If anything is going to go wrong, it is *likely* to happen in the first year. But not always.

You need to ask yourself how long you intend to keep the iBook. If you intend to keep it for 3 years, then AppleCare is a must. It can pay for itself with one repair, especially if it is something on the motherboard, like the network card.

If you don't intend to keep the iBook beyond 1 year, then you have little reason to get the AppleCare.

Keep this in mind: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ibook/faq/

My 700MHz is in the valid range, so it should be a keeper for a few more years

Exactly. I never get Apple Care because I get a new computer after some 1/2 or 3/4 year.
But I would guess that Apple Care is a very good selling argument. So getting AC is no loss after all.

I bought my iBook 900MHz G3 last April and haven't had any problems with it yet (knock on wood). The serial number range is V220XXXXXX to UV318XXXXXX for the iBooks with the video problem. My iBook is not in this range. So your iBook should not be in this range too. You can check by either running system profiler by clicking the apple icon and then About This Mac and then click More Info or lifting your keyboard up and the serial number is a sticker on the right.

My serial number starts like this UV32.

Apple called me the other day wanting me to buy AppleCare for my iBook. But I'm a poor college student and don't have the cash to afford that right now.

I bought a clamshell iBook back in 1999 and never bought AppleCare and never had a problem with it either. iBooks are good solid and reliable laptops.
