when the power boats chasing the sail boats can't keep up it becomes a whole new kind of race. I prefer the 42 meter and older 12 meter yachts and the tacking duals and dirty tricks they play on each other more than the all out speed machines they are using this time but seeing these large boats and their over 200 foot tall masts and the way these boats must be handled makes for a great show. Bert Rutan was involved in the radical design of the 'wing' the US team is using.

Alinghi started it, but BOA finished it. Lawyers just illuminated the crap Alinghi was trying to do. On the water it was BOA that was fastest. the lawyers weren't on board. Alinghi didn't even do their penalty correctly. When the french show up to race then I'll care what they think.

WOW. Didn't get a shag over the weekend did you? Personally, I think it takes far more skill doing the Vendée Globe or the La Route du Rhum then the Americas Cup.

Different kind of race. The designers aren't so important in a one type of boat race. I like the 12 meter yacht races best, followed by the 42 meter class, but the boats used this past race are really amazing. The handling of them during tacking and such isn't like mono hulls and the risk of flipping one is far greater than a deep keeled 42 meter yacht. This race reminded me of the 2nd NZL vs US cup race, when NZL just pulled away like the US boat was dragging a parachute. Dennis Connor could be heard saying "They're gone...now what?"

But then didn't he, a year or so later, then have to slow down his cat to make it look as if the perf wasn't that much better than the mono-hulled challenger? Think that I saw a Discovery show about it or something. I appreciate the tech of races like this, but the two idiots with their billions and legal teams turn the event into a farce.
I can but dream with my Hobycat. (12')
