Please do not ask how this happened I dont know the details.
what can I do at this point I would like to install 10.5 but have no idea how to do this with no working cd drive

Do you have the aluminum or plastic MacBook?

When you restart the computer, keep the trackpad button pressed. That forces to eject the CD or DVD in the drive.

Eject the disk as Oreo pointed out. Then, insert the install DVD and install OS X on the internal disk.

I thought his drive was broken. I'm confused.

connect an external dvd drive via Firewire? Or use the MacBook in Firewire target mode and connect to another Mac and use it's optical drive to install the OS.

That's why I asked if it was the aluminum or the plastic MacBook. If it's aluminum, he doesn't have Firewire. He could use a USB CD-ROM, you can get one for as little as $12.

If it's an Aluminium MacBook you can pop the hard drive out in under a minute. You'll need a USB (or firewire) drive enclosure to put the drive in. Connect it to your working Mac and install OS on drive as an external drive.
Of course you can do this with a plastic MB too but they have FW so there is no need to remove the drive.

Oh, that's true as well. ATA to USB adapters are pretty cheap also.
