CBS says it won't interfere in CNET's 'actual news,' just reviews | The Verge
Official CBS policy now bans CNET from reviewing products implicated in lawsuits, but claims CNET still has complete editorial independence over "actual news."
"CBS has nothing but the highest regard for the editors and writers at CNET… and, in terms of covering actual news, CNET maintains 100% editorial independence, and always will."
The distinction between news and reviews may be the thorniest part of CBS's response, apart from its interference with CNET's editorial team in the first place. CBS may say that the case of the Hopper is "isolated and unique," but has also said that CNET "will no longer be reviewing products manufactured by companies with which we are in litigation with respect to such product." So CNET's editorial staff is permitted to cover Timehop DVRs, Aereo's online TV service, or CBS' lawsuits with Dish and Aereo themselves as "news," but not allowed to evaluate those products and services for its readers as "reviews."

Not too dissimilar, but the Hopper is faster, more seamless, and intuitive. Also, you can access it from anywhere, with practically anything, and watch live or recorded shows. Then there's the Joeys, which basically setup themselves and have all the features of the central system. Oh, and the commercial skip is money, the networks should be scared. None of the other media providers have hardware that's nearly as good.
Soooo, their awards aren't news or of any value? Well, that's a relief.

Didn't take long for it to affect CNET again.
CNET forbidden from reviewing Aereo following CBS-Dish controversy | The Verge
But CNET's story on Aereo's update is more significant for what's built up around that small bit of news: an announcement that CNET is barred from reviewing Aereo and its products due to parent company CBS's lawsuit with Aereo.
Much of the story, however, consists of background on CBS, ABC, NBC, and Fox's lawsuits against Aereo. It notes that Aereo streams the networks' broadcasts without their permission. It explains how the retransmission fees not paid by Aereo are important to the TV networks' profit margins. But the story does not anywhere explain Aereo's defense that assigning each customer a unique antenna in its facility puts Aereo's service within the boundaries of the law. Aereo, from this perspective, is no different from a DVR.

They get a lot of traffic. They have some crazy SEO action going on.
If you google something like "blu-ray player review" the first hit is almost always CNET.
Normal people, who don't obsess over this stuff end up on CNET a lot.

Not for me, but I see your point. It seems CNet's traffic is principally reviews, while I tend to visit tech news and analysis sites like Ars Technica.
