gobo knows that there can be no god when the White Sox and Royals finish at the bottom of their division, and the Angels make the playoffs, only to be swept in the first round.

gofridge disagrees. gofridge sees the Bears defeating the Packers, the face of evil, in a come from behind victory as a sign that God is real.

Gopackers still maintains that the Bears are no Superbowl worthy team.

And they are the only team in the NFL w/o a quarterback

kind of like last year when my twins won the division on the last day of the year and then get swept by the A's

Seems to me that this is evidence that God has a sense of humor. After all, every person lives out their life in relation to the things they perceive as making life worth living. These things can be anything from an object, a person, an idea, a relationship, or a million other things found in the created order. From these things every person derives significance or feels an enduring sense of obligation. These perceptions of what is valuable or significant compete with each other and one value comes to exercise preeminence over other values. In time, people are prone to choose a center of value by which they judge other values. When a finite value such as the White Sox or Royals has been elevated to centrality and imagined as a final source of meaning, then one has chosen what Jews and Christians call a god, whereby a final value is being treated as that which nothing more valuable can be conceived. Any finite good can become a potential idolatry but to be worshiped as a god, something must be sufficiently good to be plausibly regarded as the rightful center of one's valuing. Otherwise it is not even a decent candidate for idolatry. Things that have no power to tempt us to worship is not good enough to become a credible potential idolatry. Thus, one has a god when a finite value is worshiped and adored and viewed as that which one cannot receive life joyfully.

All to say, you're not an atheist: you're a pagan because only a pagan would elevate the White Sox or Royals end-of-year standing to a supposed level of ultimacy.
