I've been having all sorts of problems getting streaming media to work
on the mac, mostly with sites involving windows media player files only.
My friend the PC guy noticed this too, and it makes him a bit leery towards even considering buying a mac ever again. "I'm all about viewing streaming media....if I can't get that stuff to work, there's no point in me buying a TiPB."

I used to have problems with Real Player, but that seems to have recently been fixed.

Anyhow, what happens is this:

I"ll go to click on a link, and a separate java window will come up, but
then I get a broken puzzle piece icon...which directs me to go to the microsoft site to get this "windows media player plugin".

However, I'll go there and see no such thing.

How do fix the problem? I noticed that alot of places are picking the inferior WMP format as the default standard for streaming media, esp. this place:

I can't view any of the movies here. *sigh*

Does anybody know the solution to this particular problem? Thanks.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Well, I just came from there and didn't have any problems viewing their streaming media. . . OS 9.2.1/IE5/WMP7. What's your profile?

I think there's a WMP forum for Mac users somewhere at MS.

I'm running WMP 7.1.3, IE 5.2, and OS 10.2.1.

I get this error message along with the puzzle piece inside the red circle with a slash in it:

You do not have the plug-in neede to view the "video/x-ms-asf" type information on this page. To get the plug-in now, clich View Plug-in Page.

This problem even occurred on my old PC, it's a long standing problem.

In Mozilla....I was playing around with the helper application preferences.
For "ASF", what's the mime type considered to be? Is this the root of where the problem is in both IE and Mozilla browsers?
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!

Hey...it's working....but only on OS 9.2.2

I rebooted under there and tried everything out....with the newest version of software (I've been running in X since January roughly), everything works beautifully. Great stuff.

Only problem now is that OS X's Windows Media Player...that thing is still a POS. it lacks the plug-in support to play those media files, I downloaded WMP again, re-installed, and checked out that site again. No go....

This is a Microsoft problem though....it's not very inspiring for prospective mac buyers hoping to utilize OS X primarily.
Now I know, and knowing is half the battle!
