Haha, I love that picture. I saw it on someone's door the other day.

I'm not entirely sure about that. What is generally called sushi in America is not actually sushi, it's maki-zushi (the maki being the roll part). My understanding is that sushi itself is what in America is generally called sashimi, ie raw fish served over rice. And sashimi is just raw fish. I think, that traditionally sushi will always include be raw fish as will maki-zushi, and the non-fish types may just be an Americanization. Again, I'm not 100% sure about this, I'll ask my roommate when he gets back (or some Japanese NNer or just someone who knows this stuff a little better than me could confirm or deny this before then).

Interesting note: the dictionary.com definition of sushi is wrong (I am sure about the sushi not necessarily being in roll form).

Scratch that. My roommate got back and disabused me of the notion that sushi is only fish. I'm still confident of my definitions of sushi, sashimi, &c though.

Sushi is good, I love eating it, but one thing most americans have it wrong is that when they hear sushi, they will think right away that it has raw fish it in. Sorry man, but Sushi does not mean raw fish in anyway. There are some sushi dishes that has raw fish in it, but most of them don't. Sashimi (wan't sure on the spelling, but that's about what it sounds like) means raw fish dish. Sorry, but the Americans had it all wrong for a long long time.

Some sushi is all vegetable and rice. No meat.

You have a much better chance of getting one from Pork or Beef.

Wrong.

There are a number of different types of sushi, the most common abroad being the one depicted above: Maki-sushi ("rolled sushi"). The raw fish on a litle ball of rice is Nigiri-zushi. Not all sushi contains fish, and not all fish in or on sushi is raw.

Sashimi *is* just raw fish - at least, that's what the Japanese sell it as, though I suppose they just don't know any better.

Oh, and that pic is pretty funny.

Not really, since beef or pork are rarely eaten raw.

My understanding was that sashimi is just the fish. When you add rice, it becomes sushi. Rolls are then a subset of sushi.

I guess I didn't explain that too well in the first post and, as I said, I was wrong about the fish part. Regardless, it's late, I have work in less than 7 hours, I'm going to bed.

Yes, exactly.

I believe we concur.

Sleep. Good.

'night!

Edit: That is, not exactly: Rolls (maki-zushi) are a subset of sushi. However, not all sushi, and not all maki-zushi - not even all nigiri-zushi - contain fish.

Wow, sure took them long enough. It's already out on DVD here. That's sad that it took this long for UK to get it even though it's the same language. I don't think they would have to convert it over to PAL since it's in a film wheel and just projects it out of the projector. Oh well...

Now I knew about certain parasitic danger in eating raw or ill cooked pork --- but I did not realize that there were parasites in beef

Must investigate on this...

Japan has the highest life expectancy of any country, beating the US by like four or five years. The Japanese are on the whole very healthy. I've never fealt healthier than when I was living in Japan. I was dying for really good mexican food though.

By the way, pork or isn't very safe to eat undercooked. Beef if fresh ( and from a healthy cow) can be eaten raw. Mmm... steak tartare...
