Since installing the new Security Update 2004-09-07, I can't access my FTP on my PowerBook.

Only by using SFTP.

Before the security update, it was working fine.

I read others who are seeing this at:

http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/

I'm sure glad I didn't update yet based off these reports and the rendering woes on some sites...

same problem for me.

edit: maybe they did it on purpose because ftp is insecure. As stated on xlr8yourmac.com, sftp works. I guess it's no biggie. I prefer the security anyway, just never new that sftp ran by default.

However, I can only use SFTP if I enable Remote Access as well. Surely this isn't right?

Yeah, that's gotta be a bug. You don't need to turn FTP on to use SFTP. Turning on Remote Access alone does the trick.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Enabling Remote Access turns on SSH. SFTP is part of SSH.

I make my FTP connection through DreamWeaver 2004MX. Is that likely to be blocked as well?
I dread to have to troubleshoot figuring out if DW can employ SFTP - or how - or what limitations I may have.

Suggestions, warnings or observations (I'm delaying the Security update for now).

Strange, ftp works fine for me, but it's personal web sharing that's been hosed for me since the update... I start up web sharing from the sharing pref pane, but it says its "starting up" until I close the prefs. Anyone got a hint about what I need to do to fix it?

run "apachectl configtest" from the terminal. i bet it will show errors in your httpd.conf -- the existence of errors would cause your observed symptoms. "sudo pico /etc/httpd/httpd.conf" to fix those offending lines (or use emacs or vi <-- the true choice , whatever)

that did the trick... it found a syntax error somewhere in the last lines of the httpd.conf file. I commented them out (not sure if they should be deleted at first), and now web sharing works like it should. The only question is, how did the file get changed? could the update possibly modify this (and other related) files? I would think not...

it shouldn't have changed the file judging by apple's stated list of updated components: http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...5_Client).html . 'tis a mystery. fwiw, my httpd.conf was unaffected.

Just curious, what lines did you comment out?
