Shouldn't this be in the animal abuse/slaughterhouse thread?

Hey, one of my dogs had recently the same surgery yours had, after three weeks he is again all OK. I guess it was a good thing, dew claws doesn't really do anything for them. Help her as best you can.

Good luck

I didn't know you could do this to dogs. Seems sorta cruel.

OK, dumb question: What are "dew claws"?

They're like thumbs. Their paws only have 4 toes, and there's usually a 5th claw up their legs a little bit. Her front ones are attached really well, but her back ones were just dangling there by a tiny little flap of skin. Basically, she's almost evolved not to have any rear ones..... they just snipped them off and put on a little bandage.

They're claws on the back side of a dogs legs, slightly above the paw normally on the front legs but also sometimes on the back.

They're removed because they aren't very strong attached and could be ripped out causing all sorts of things which probably aren't all that good. Like say, infection.

However other people claim that such injuries never happen and that it actually helps improve traction and so removing it is useless and painful.

I'm sure we can get all hot and bothered over this controversial issue.

I'm wondering how I could open up Mountain Dew cans if my boss had my fingernails surgically removed.

Exactly, that is what happened to my dog. He got badly damaged such tiny little flap of skin where the dew claws are attached.

However other people claim that such injuries never happen and that it actually helps improve traction and so removing it is useless and painful.
Not painful, it took something like 15 minutes to be removed, then my dog left the clinic walking as if nothing happened. Sure you need to treat the stitches and clean the area that got surgery. But hey, that is a given.

Recover was slower than expected -three weeks- but no more dew claws issues.

Hmm, the vet said my dog's dew claws were attached at the bone, so she'd have to go under general anaesthesia. so we figured we'd wait until she had some other reason to go under; two birds, one stone, etc.

Those of you that had it done, were you bone-attached?

When we had our dog fixed, they did her dew claws at the same time. Not attached to the bone though. I'd not heard of that before.

Honestly if they're attached to the bone I'd just leave them alone. >shrug< Laika actually uses her front ones to help her hold toys.... plus... as our vet said, yeah, they might hurt them at some point, but most people sprain their thumbs at some point and we don't cut those off.
