Does anyone happen to know the maximum number of drives or drive images that can be mounted by OSX at the same time?

At least 5. 7 if you count disk images, and 8 if you add CDs to that.

At least in theory, there is no limit. Drives aren't given letters in OSX like they are in Windows, so that isn't an issue.

This said, I don't know if the limits have been tested. I've had upwards of ten before, but I've never tried to really push it.

I doubt that there is a limit and if there is one would probably have to mount a whole lot of disk images... I just tested 30 and I ran out of .dmg files maybe someone else feels like testing this to the absurd

There isn't much use for disk images, but in the business world it's common to have many shared disks on a network. It's unusual to have all of these mounted at once, of course, but being able to do so in whatever circumstance could require it would be a Good Thing.
