Citywide, bedbugs
go bite in the night

One lawmaker has a blanket proposal for tackling the growing bedbug problem, which is making nights miserable in homes and hotels across the city.
Complaints about the nocturnal bloodsuckers have flooded private exterminators as well as city health workers, City Councilwoman Gale Brewer said yesterday. She wants to establish a Bedbug Task Force and crack down on the used-mattress business.
"Bedbugs have become a horrible problem," Brewer (D-Manhattan) said in announcing her proposed legislation.
The task force would bring together city agencies to work on a response to the infestation. The law also would slap a $250 fine on anyone caught selling refurbished mattresses - and require new and old mattresses to be transported separately.
Currently, anyone selling a used mattress is required to have a license from the state and from the city's Department of Consumer Affairs.
While there is no official tally of city bedbug complaints, pest-control experts and scientists say the city is in the midst of a serious outbreak.
"I can't think of a place we haven't seen them," said Jeffrey Eisenberg, of Pest Away Exterminating in Manhattan.
A decade ago, Eisenberg saw 50 bedbug cases a year. Today, he fields about 65 calls in a week.
In the past two years, bedbugs have been found everywhere from posh hotels to taxis, from low-income housing to upscale apartments, Eisenberg said.
Bedbugs are proliferating overseas and can easily hitch a ride on luggage and clothing.
The flat, wingless pests are about the size of an apple seed and come out at night to seek out a warm body. They feed for five to 10 minutes, then crawl away and lie low for several days, or even months, to digest the meal.
.........
Just a FYI to non-New yorkers of what to expect in cabs & hotels here.

There's a lot of them in this building, although luckily there haven't been any in my room (so far). My friend actually had to switch rooms over christmas break because there were so many in his room. He was covered in bites. Another reason I can't wait to get an apartment and get out of here next year...

A bedbug is the name of the genus. It's not a category of bugs, it's one specific genus.
