is there a 'speck'-like hard, protective plastic case /whatever it's called for ibooks? i've tried searching but didn't find anything like that. TIA

No, there isn't. And there never will be, either.

ok, that settles that i guess.
what other options are there? i've searched around and ran into a product that looks like a thick (but flexible) plastic cover that adheres to the ibook and palmrests. something like that would be OK except that i'd really want to get something that alters the exterior appearance (especially if i could get it to not be so white). that really is the priority, i'd like to protect and do away with some of the whiteness.

Brenthaven speciality makes cases to fit pretty much any size of laptop. They make cases that specifically fit the Macbook (what I have) and I believe they do the same for iBooks, although I am not 100% sure.
I have a Brenthaven Edge for my Macbook--a five-star product in my opinion. Inside the case the laptop is surrounded by one-inch padding while the outside is covered with a hard shell. Possibly they make a Brenthaven Edge for the iBook. It cost me $49.95 through Brenthaven's website.
Hope this helps. Good luck.
