I am interested in learning about blog development and I was wondering what software sites like Gawker Media use (Kotaku, Defamer, Consumerist, etc.)
I have a client that is interested in transforming their promotion into a blog style setup, and these sites seem to have the best layout.

Lots of sites use WordPress. I'm not sure if the specific ones you mentioned use it, but it's pretty easy to use.
Also, tons of people use it so if you run into a problem there's probably documentation about it somewhere.

If at any point you think you will get high traffic, do not use WordPress.

Too much traffic and the servers go down. I'm not sure what the threshold is. What kind of blog are you planning on having?

I have a friend who uses square space and is happy with it, except when there is heavy bandwidth use (video hosting), the cost gets rather expensive.

My stupid iPhone game: Nesen Probe, it's rather old, annoying and pointless, but it's free.
Was free. Now it's gone. Never to be seen again.
Off to join its brother and sister apps that could not
keep up with the ever updating iOS. RIP Nesen Probe.

MovableType 4 vs. Wordpress 2.2
I use MT on my podcast's site, but I have some issues with how it works, especially when uploading pictures. I have to do that manually FIRST, and once I figure out how to tell MT where the image is, THEN I can post a pic. Stupid. I looked for plugins to help with that, and I found one....for $20.
WP is much better. Want an image? Point to it on your desktop and it uploads it for you, and even gives you options on how you want to use it.
However, as people say, WP can bring your server to its knees IF it's a popular site because WP creates each page on the fly, whereas MT creates the page source once. However, if you forget to update your MT site, you'll have old page code. However, I know there are some popular sites that use WP and have no problems.
For my blog, I installed WP. It has a lot of nice little plugins, and was easy to install. I still think that they're both good content management tools, but WP has the slight edge.

Kotaku is part of the Gawker Family - and I expect they use an inhouse thing.

My blog used to be on Wordpress, and hit digg quite a few times and got a few hundred thousand hits in 48 hours and held up fine.
I've now witten my own backend in Ruby, and its considerably nicer though.
