hi, my 17 inch C2D mac bookpro just had a severe crash and can't be booted. tried the OSX install disc 1 and use the disc utility for repair and failed ,
the message like this :

" keys out of order
rebuilding catalog B -tree
the volume Mac HD could not be repaired"
so what should i do ?

Definitely take it to whoever sold it to you. They'll run some disc rescue utilities and run fsck to check your hard drive and recover your data. Then you'll need the hard drive replaced (even if you don't need to, insist on it anyway since you have a guarantee).

The crash mangled your hard drive's directory structure. You will need stronger medicine than Disk Utility, something like Disk Warrior or TechTools. You may not need to replace the drive, but you do need to figure out what caused the crash.

This IS about a MacBook Pro, right? Why does the title say "iMac"? I'll fix it...

Someone had the same problem on their iMac and the rest is easy to follow.

well, i finally take the MBP to the apple service center and they fixed it within one day by using better disk repair tool than disc utility in MBP, such that all my data are kept intact, well, their service is eficient here in HK

And you did go out and buy an external HD to keep a regular backup of your data right?

well, actually i do ve external hard drive back up of all my data, but if the MBP hard disk could not be recovered, i 'll lose data in recent 1mth, that 's not good of course, i start to think to ve more frequent back up now
