Is there any simple way to invoke a TM backup from within the TM preference panel? I know there's a dock menu option 'Back Up Now' if you put the TM app in your Dock, but I was looking for some kind of hidden switch in the TM system pref. I tried all kinds of stuff like option clicking or opening it up while holding option or shift. No dice. Anybody know a trick?

do you suppose that little on/off button on the lower left corner might help

just move it to the on position & it will do it's thing !

ps....if your prefs are locked, clik on the padlock & enter you admin password
Personally I find it hilarious that you have the hots for my gramma. Especially seeins how she is 3x your age, and makes your Brittney-Spears-wannabe 30-something wife look like a rag doll who went thru WWIII with a burning stick of dynamite up her a** :)

Riiiiiight. If it were that simple, you'd think I would have found it.

Unfortunately going to off and then back to on doesn't launch TM backup here. My question's also not about TM "not doing it's thing", it's about invoking a TM backup right now (IOW before the next scheduled one).

You cannot invoke TM (say to restore something) from the preference panel. The preference panel only allows you to turn on the monitoring/backups and set the preferences of what to back up.

Could they have designed the preference pane to do what you're asking - of course but they didn't.

You can force a Time Machine backup using AppleScript.

Other than that and the Dock I do not know any other ways to force a backup.

These guys were looking for the same thing. They didn't find it, but they did come across the CLI 'backup now' call the link above also quotes. Too bad there's no button in the TM system pref to invoke the command.

There's also a contextual menu in Finder: control-click on the backup disk, either
in the sidebar... or in the 'Computer' window (but apparently not on the desktop).

Thanks! That's a new one. Good idea too apart from...

(but apparently not on the desktop).
Bummer. What's the logic there?

Of course that's exactly where I would have most liked to see it.
