I've just installed Leopard on my MacBook a few days ago. Since it's been installed I haven't had a proper shut down.

This isn't the freezing on the blank desktop issue as on other threads, the computer does seem to completely shut down, except for the power light staying on and a very feint fan noise. This is when its on my desk setup and lid closed, plugged in, powered up and connected to screen, keyboard mouse etc. When its not connected and I use it as a laptop, the power light does go off, but when I close the lid the light comes on again, and still has the slight fan noise.

The only way I can properly shut down is holding the power button down for 10 seconds, and then next time I start I get the message about not being shut down properly and send off the report note to Apple. I installed as a straight upgrade from 10.4, and I've had no kernel panics or any other odd behaviour, it just wont shut down. I'm currently putting Disk Utility over the hard drive, I've done a verify, repair and another verify, and still get ACL found but not expected on "Applications". after the repair. Any ideas of whats wrong or what I can do?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

What sort of Leopard install did you do -- archive, upgrade, erase?

Also, did you upgrade to 10.5.1? Whether you have or haven't, download the full updater (not the one you may have received through Software Update) and install it.

Upgrade install, a few iMacs in work have been upgraded this way with no problems except having the blue screen for a few minutes on the first restart after install, mine got the blue screen for about a minute, at the time I thought it was normal because I saw the iMacs do the same thing. Installed 10.5.1 through software update. I have to admit I didn't wait around to see how long the light stays on for, it may shut down itself properly after a while, but I haven't wanted to stand around watching a light, and forced the shutdowns anyway.

I'll try downloading the full 10.5.1 update and installing that.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

If the full updater doesn't fix it, consider doing an archive-install from the Leopard DVD. It'll preserve everything, including network & users (if you set that option), but often fixes a lot of the flakiness that an upgrade causes.

I installed the download of 10.5.1 lastnight.

Shutdown as a laptop ie. not connected to anything, light stayed on for a few seconds after i closed the lid, then it was fine. Got it connected up now and just tried shutting down to see what happens, and its still the power light and fans (also the USB hub light). Held down the power button to shut down, started up again and got the shutdown error message. I've copied out the log from the report this time, here it is if anyone can understand it.

The backtrace indicates issues with baltaks.driver, which is part of DoubleCommand.

DoubleCommand

You may want to completely uninstall that and see how your Mac runs afterwards.
