A Des Moines Area Community College handbook with a typographical error that the school president says is unfortunate and offensive was handed out to some 10,000 students before the problem was discovered. A calendar entry for Feb. 16, 2009, was supposed to read, "Black History Lunch and Learn" for an event on the West Des Moines campus.

Instead, it says "Black History Linch and Learn."
Well done, community college. I heard about this on the news, then read the story online, only to find this:
Student Corwin Colebrooke, who is black, laughed when shown the entry. "Wow, that's awkward," said Colebrooke, 26, of Ames.

"I guess I don't feel much of a threat by it," he said, noting that he's not easily offended.
I actually know this guy. He's the most awkward person I've ever met, so I found the whole situation hilarious.

Scratch that. Got shot down by the wife. Apparently we're staying with Griffin (my original favorite).

Nah, not a Zelazny fan, but might be after I read some of his stuff. I've put it on my future read list.

Well, if the typist's finger had to slip, good thing it slipped to the right and hit an 'i', rather than slipping to the left and hitting a 'y', thus making it much less obvious that it was a typo.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Actually, when I saw this on the news, I was thinking that it'd be much easier to explain as a typo if it had been spelled correctly - shouldn't Word have put a red underline under "linch" since it's not an actual word?

OS X doesn't put a line under it, but it also doesn't have a dictionary entry for it.

Mac OS X ≠ Microsoft Office on Windows, where the program was presumably produced, however.

Sure it's a word:

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/linch

Linch\ (l[i^]nch), n. [AS. hlinc a hill.] A ledge; a right-angled projection.

I think it's the root of the word "linchpin", which incidentally is what you get if you type "linch" into OS X's dictionary.

And no, it doesn't get underlined on OS X (not on Leopard, anyway).

Does here on 10.4.11 with a UK dictionary. Both in Word and TextEdit.

I'd post visual evidence, but I can't be bothered to find the password to my webspace FTP upload.

I reckon you should name your lad "Dean". And then give him a middle name of "Dean".

Trust me, nobody's ever gonna forget that name when it comes to job interviews and the like.

I can attest to how stupid community college newspaper editors are. My brother submitted an article (and was accepted) for their newspaper. My brother didn't want to look like an idiot, so the article was meticulously reviewed. When we finally saw the article in the newspaper, it looked like a 4-year-old wrote it. The editor added grammatical and spelling errors into the article. They also wouldn't issue an apology for the poorly and heavily modified article. My brother was pretty pissed.

I already have three first names for my full name. My parents might as well have gone the extra mile, as you suggest.

Your suggestion might be nice as a declaration, question, and exclamation. "Dean. Dean? Dean!" Is it legal to build punctuation marks into a name?

Don't you have to turn that on? Right Click (or control click) and make sure Check Spelling is selected.

Careful. That image post might be a copyright violation, especially if you're a fan of his music.

Also, be sure not to utter his name. You'll be served with papers within an hour.
