If you loathe the idea of getting more service from AT&T, I would be willing to buy your activated SIM card for the amount of balance, and $20 plus shipping, ($1).

If somebody finds out that the SIM won't work on an iPhone, even with all the necessary mechanical modifications, then the deal is off.

AFAIK, the AT&T contract is entirely optional, so it's very unlikely that anybody with an iPad + 3G will be stuck with an unwanted microSIM.

All iPad recipients will have a microSIM by default. Whether they activate or not is up to the whim of the owner.

Moreover, when you activate, you don't need to sign a contract.

Ah - I didn't know that.

While I haven't found explicit mention of that fact, Apple's own page seems to corroborate it by implying no extra step is necessary.

Apple - iPad - Stay connected everywhere you go.

Certainly the only smart-phone-thingy you can get as an illegal immigrant.

True. but why would someone buy an 3G iPad and then dump the sim card? Most folks will be using it in their own country so it seems like an irrational move to sell the sim card after paying an extra $130.00 over the cost of a Wifi-equipped iPad.

Out of curiosity, why would you want/need an activated microSIM from a 3G iPad?

When robbing banks, it's a good thing if your calls trace to another person ...

A. You have a strong moral principle against paying AT&T a single cent. Go to a different 3G provider.
B. Going to a country where the iPad is unavailable and there is no AT&T.

So is the sim is easy to access, or would you have to open the iPad up to get at it?

You could open up the iPad, I guess, but it would be easier to just pull out the SIM slot.

Evidence A: Apple - iPad - View the technical specifications for iPad.
Micro SIM card tray (Wi-Fi + 3G model only)
IIRC, it's at the top left.

At least, that's where it was when Steve Jobs showed it at the presentation.

In fact,

Evidence B:

right next to the headphone jack.
