Pocket dictionaries are actually pretty useful, when you think about it. Sometimes you run across a word in conversation or in an article that you don't recognize, and being able to define it on the fly makes your life much easier. Maybe you're a writer and suffer from same-word-syndrome, where you repeatedly use the same descriptor over and over. A pocket dictionary can help break the cycle by suggesting synonyms. Enter Terminology 3, a dictionary app that offers more than the standard definition function in iOS. The program includes a full, completely-offline US English dictionary, thesaurus and word reference that allows you to find definitions, synonyms, and antonyms whenever the need strikes.

Find something particularly interesting? Terminology has a favorites feature, allowing you to "star" words in order to return to them later. Can't remember a word you were searching earlier? There's a word-browsing history that allows you to revisit your earlier searches. Can't quite remember the word you're looking for? The app even allows you to do a "wildcard" search, and by placing an asterisk (*) in your search, it will locate partial matches.

If that wasn't enough on its own, Terminology has custom "actions" that allow you to search for your current word or phrase on websites and in other apps -- like Google Image Search, Wikipedia, and more. You can even create your own actions, or visit Terminology's Action Directory, which can allow you to install helpful actions with a single tap.

The app itself is straightforward, with a pleasing neutral color scheme, and features an array of easy-to-read fonts to choose from. There's no clutter for you to get lost in, which is appreciated when you're researching on the go. Terminology flows smoothly from one feature to the next, is easy to read with appropriately-sized fonts, and the definitions are clearly worded. Not only does the program include the standard set of synonyms and antonyms, it offers other helpful suggestions, such as telling you what the word or phrase may be related to.

The app also features Dropbox integration and syncs with iCloud, so you can be sure to never lose favorite words or word searches. Terminology 3costs $3, and is designed for both iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad.

Who Terminology would be good for: writers, linguists, students, those who want to learn the meaning of new terms they hear

Who Terminology may not be well-suited for: those satisfied with the built-in "Define" function in iOS
