At some point today I lost sound output on my Al 17" Powerbook G4. No sound at all from either the internal speakers or headphones when plugged into the output jack (though the Sound preferences panel does recognize when I have headphones plugged in). I don't even hear a startup chime.

So far I've tried restarting, obviously, resetting open firmware and zapping the PRAM (though it's hard to tell if I did this successfully without the chime to confirm it).

Does anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Some google searches have found similar problems, but when solutions were listed they seemed to mostly be zapping PRAM or resetting OF.

I'm still running 10.3.9, is there any chance that if I move to Tiger a fresh OS install would fix the problem?

Well this might sound crazy after all you've done but try repairing permissions. Can't say for sure if it will work but I had a friend who had a similar problem with his iMac and repairing permissions did the trick. It can't hurt to try.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I just tried it and that didn't help either.

I also ran it through a full set of TechTool diagnostics, during which no problems came up.
