Hey, I was wondering if there is any talk around the internets about the iPod touch being hacked as much as the iPhone. Honestly, if I can run the NES emulator on a Touch along with whatever else creative program independant developers can use the touch screen for, I might get one and not even listen to music that much.

Hmm it's always possible, since it is essentially a crippled iPhone.

Keep your eyes peeled, because it would be made very very public online if it were to happen.

And it's also not really subject to mandatory updates like the iphone, so people could keep their Touch iPods at the same firmware that works for the hacks to run.

Anyways, yeah I'll probably just keep my eyes on Digg.

doesn't the Touch use the same encryption scheme as the iPhone -- the same method that has kept users from jailbreaking update 1.1.1? If so, a jailbreak method for the iPhone that uses a Safari buffer overflow to inject itself onto the system may be able to do it on a Touch if the user visited a specially-crafted webpage. Dunno. Just speculating.

I was on the iPhone/iTouch Dev Team's IRC server last night, and from what Niacin (the hacker who discovered how to use the TIFF overflow exploit) said, it's only a couple of days away at this point. It works, mostly, but there are bugs, and it's a pretty technical process for most people (extensive Terminal use). He's ironing out the bugs, and trying to make it an automatic script. I'd say end of this week is a realistic expectation.
