Gentlemen,
Mac OS X 10.4.11
Developer Xtools installed from the retail 10.1 discs.
The problem: This is the first time I came across the need of installing something
through terminal. I am a completely newbie regarding terminal environment,
so I this is my problem:
I want to install DELUGE - a bit torrent client.
First I did download the MacPorts DMG and sucessfully installed.
Then I tried to run the instructions commands for Deluge installation, but I
was not able because the "PORT" was not in my "bash".
The commands were:
sudo port install deluge
I went to Google searching for help and found the following lines:
export PATH=$PATH:/opt/local/bin
export MANPATH=$MANPATH:/opt/local/share/man
export INFOPATH=$INFOPATH:/opt/local/share/info
After entering those 3 lines, the sudo command was accepted,
but then I got a error talking about "CC something" was not installed.
Then I remembered about the Developer Xtools and installed from
my original Tiger discs.
And now, all I get nothing when I run the "sudo port install deluge".
Not exactly nothing - I got a message about "BOOST something",
but nothing after that. Eternal wait.
This afternoon the installer was a bit forward in the process,
it presented several lines with installation messages, but
stopped again with no results.
So I press CRTL+C and quit the operation after 30 minutes of
wait. Any ideas? Do you guys need the exactly messages
presented on terminal?
How do I put the PORT command permanently in my "bash"?
I feel completely lost doing things I can't understand.
Ha ha ha.
Thanks for your attention!
G.

I hope that's a typo!
Anyways, to fix your problem, follow this:
2.4. MacPorts and the Shell
The problem you were having is since you were typing those EXPORT commands in the command, the port command was only added to your PATH while you had the terminal window open. Adding those to .profile or the bash profile file will run those commands every time you open a new terminal.
By the way, I recommend the BT client Transmission It's much better and Mac OS X native with a real Cocoa interface.

Dear Timmerk,
Yes, it was a TYPO!

And thank you so much for your attention regarding my questions.
Matter of fact I am already a user of Transmission, but a "linuxer" friend
told me that Transmission does not handle encrypted connections/peers
very well and I should migrate to Deluge.
But in the end... I think I will stick with Transmission.
It the most nice and smooth Bit Torrent client that I ever used.
And I definitely need to get some O'Really books about
Unix and Mac OS X terminal environment for some studies.
Best regards from a Mac OS newbie,
G.

Could someone walk me through the process?
I installed MacPorts via the Leopard .dmg file. It said the install was successful. When in terminal I type "sudo port install deluge" but it then says "sudo: port: command not found"
Your help is much appreciated.
