It also allowed any crackpot to make a crummy sci-fi movie for television with sub-par effects. Oh well...

It also allows good TV shows to have good special effects. Like Star Trek, Battle Star, StarGate, and Firefly. Seriously. If you have a decent budget you can get real great effects.
And yes, some special effects suck. So do a lot of TV shows in general.

Star Wars Remains Ahead of the Digital Curve
With the release of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, Claypool said, his company is seeing a huge uptick in business for its digital projectors. "It's obscene, but where these exhibitors make their money is on concessions. But they still need people in the theater and in the seats. Episode III is a huge release and its ideal showing is in the digital format."

in the recent Wired article it explains how wild 80s special effects morphed into TV broadcasting graphics once the tech matured
star wars is just a movie but his contributions are long lasting. he changed the world and should be credited with his tech ingenuity or atleast his leadership and support. [steven spielberg for all his glory didn't do nearly as much in advancing technology]

Speaking of Padme, I saw a story over the weekend about the premier of the third film at Cannes... Natalie Portman shaved her head.
