I have an original 5 GB iPod.

Only changes are a padded case and the iPod remote control
I got for Christmas.

Lately, it's been acting very strange:
While playing it will suddenly "reset" all by itself.

It will be playing a piece of music and all of a sudden the
music stops and the Apple logo appears. It then goes to the
main menu. Sometimes it will display an icon of a folder with
an exclamation point in it when it does this before going to
the main menu.

Sometimes I don't even make it to a piece of music - I'll be
scrolling to access a tune and it resets like that.

I've tried resetting it with no change.

I have a suspicion that the power supply in my G4 is dying and
it is acting like the battery is running on very low power as
one point it said "the Ipod is low on battery power, please
connect to a power source now" type error and it shuts off
just after this.

I've charged it today on the AC adapter and will check for the
same behavior. If not, it may be the G4 just isn't giving it
as full a charge as it could. If so, to the local Apple depot
I go. It's over a year old though, this could stink.

I think the folder + Exclamation mark means the HD has an error or somthing along those lines.
we don't have time to stop for gas

I wonder if the drive can be diskdoctored?

Thanks for the info. I've been playing the same set of tunes
for months, I think it's time to remove everything, reformat
or start over.

I have read a post similar to yours also on a MacNN thread. The person said that the also got the folder with exclamation point. When they plugged their iPod into their computer, everything worked fine. So, they thought that the problem must be with the battery. I myself have no clue on what the problem is.
