I got some Icons I want to use on my desktop, but they were supplied as .png files. How do I use thme as icons for my folders on the desktop? Is it an OS thing or do I need software?

Software

I'd use iconographer to compile the final icon, and you're going to need to generate a mask for them, so you'll be using photoshop too.

Edit: Well a mask isn't entirely difficult, if you just plan on having a big square for your icon. I can walk you through the process if you like.

This is an example:

Surprising subject matter, I'm sure.

Why would someone distribute icons that I can't just copy and paste?

Oh, and if indeed this is just a software solution and not an OS option, I can see how it might get moved.

Did they say they were Mac icons or just generic icons?

Ah, beautiful, it has a transparent background. This makes things much easier.

Edit: Will you be making several of these? (And yes, I'm shocked. It's exactly what I was predicting)

Yes, several. EDIT: Ok, not several. The AFC, but I may want to do more someday.

They said they were Mac desktop icons. See here so I'm not crazy. Da Icons.

Did they assume everyone has an Icon Editor?

Well, I downloaded it. It came with two folders. One was labeled icons, and the other PNGs.

You can use go into info and use the copy past method you described on the files in the icons folder.

I'll try again, I only got PNG, I'd still like some Icon software... and the knowledge of enhancing my desktop.

To edit the icons I use photoshop (I even used it to create icons for my mobile phone themes (png as well)).
If I want to change an icon for a specific folder or application I use the "get info" copy/paste trick.
If I want to change the icon of a system folder, or to change all the folders icons I use candy bar.

Hey everybody, if you look at the contents of the zip you'll find 2 folders, one includes the icons you can paste in the "Get Info" window and another folder of PNGs. In the future feel free to ask me directly, via my site, if you have questions or concerns. I offered the PNGs at the request of people who wanted to do more custom stuff with these, not to make it more difficult for general Mac folks.
