after inserting a dvd into my new 15"albook the picture is very grainy and i notice alot of artefacts at the beginning when i see those warning and copyright notices on a black background. this disappears a couple of minutes into the movie and plays perfect but its kind of annoying. it happens on all my dvds. any remedy

These artifacts might be the result of Apple's DVD Player's lack of deinterlacing. It's just pathetic that the DVD Player lacks this crucial feature.

How about VLC from http://www.videolan.org ? I don't have my PB with me to cross check the quality but I use this instead and best of all, it is free.
