I'd like to check my credit and see what my FICO score is.
Is there any way to do this without buying a credit report?
If I need to buy one, is the $9.50 one from equifax all that I need?

Thx,

Scott

just fyi, when you get your credit score through the bureaus, only one of the 3 gives you the actual FICO score (either experian or equifax... don't recall). the other two give you their own in-house score. if you want to make sure you get your actual FICO score, calculated with the same algorithm used at the bureaus, check out myfico.com. bit more expensive, but you get your actual FICO score from all 3 bureaus. you can buy a single score there for $14.95. not sure how much you know about credit scores, but i would suggest reading the myfico site.

for those of you able to access a free credit report from the above site already, you should stagger them throughout the year, that way you don't have just a single snapshot of your credit history.

I dont know if the rules are different in the US but in Canada we are entitled to one free report per year at no charge. I check equifax every year since I learned that.

Thanks.....I was wondering when this was going to be available. Just so everyone knows, you have to pay extra for your credit score.

Hey king - I just got mine from one of the three... the other two wants a snail mailed form, so I havent hit them yet. Check on their websites. But if the FICO is the actual credit rating, you won't get those from the free ones. Although given the way things have been going, $40 a year may not be a bad investment for all the bells and whistles. Just my .02

you should be able to get all 3 free, via telephone. At least, it's that way in MA.

In MD, you are entitled by state law to receive one free copy per year of each of your credit reports (one from each reporting agency). Credit reports do not contain a FICO score, just the entries in your report.

Actually, though, as a student, you may not technically be a resident of MD, so I am not sure if you are eligible.

There is, of course, freecreditreport.com that advertises on the TV. I've never used it, the only catch I know is that getting the report signs you up for their credit alert system, which you then have to cancel within 30 days if you don't want it.

Well you can get them from either http://www.freecreditreport.com or http://www.myfico.com or you can get it from experians website as well or from the other 2 reporting agencies. Unless you are making a major purchase like a car or house you really only need to get one of them.

I disagree -- the three agencies may not have the same information. It is important to get all three.

tooki's right, the three agencies may have discordant data. As far as a free credit report is concerned, annualcreditreport.com is the official service of the credit bureaus provided in accordance with the recent legislation mandating a free credit report every twelve months. freecreditreport.com is the service that advertises constantly, and I used them a few months ago. You probably will not be able to get your FICO score without forking over some cash, but if someone has found a legitimate site that will provide it for free or ultra low-cost I would be interested to know about it.

i posted earlier, and i'm fairly sure it is equifax that will give you your actual FICO score, the other two bureaus give you an in-house developed score (i.e. NOT the score pulled by banks/cc companies/etc).

Big Mac: as tooki pointed out, you don't get any score at all unless you fork over the cash. the free credit reports just contain the entries in your report. but if you can figure out the algorithm fair isaac uses, then you can calculate your own score from the report .

What ticks me off the most is the pain-in-the-ass process of getting mistakes corrected. There's some dude in NY with the same name as I, and he and his wife have a credit card that always shows up on my reports. I mail the letter, fill out the forms, and presto... the damn account is still on my report.

That really stinks. I didn't know something like that could possibly happen.
