I'm confused. Are we supposed to sympathize with the peaceful protesters or the mob that the police had to get in the way of?

That's for you to decide. Do you support Phelps or the Patriot Guard?

Surely "peaceful" protesters wouldn't have their mouths open, as if shouting obscenities?

We probably have different definitions of peaceful. I believe speech is inherently peaceful unless it is directing someone to commit violence.

Is this like some Christians protesting the burial and homecoming of gay soldiers?

I'll leave that for you to decide.

Why not next time send the coppers for a donut break. I'm sure the soldiers can handle the situation.

Agreed. The despicable Phelps family hates just about everyone other than bigoted, hateful fundamentalist Christians like them. They're just about as hateful as any radical Muslim one can come across, aside perhaps from the exploding kind.

Sweden:
"Political tensions boiled over in January, when a peaceful pro-Israel demonstration in the center of the city was disrupted by a counter-demonstration of anti-Israel protesters, made up primarily of Muslim immigrants and far-Left ethnic Swedes. The protesters threw rocks and firecrackers and attempted to intimidate rally participants into leaving. Citing safety concerns, police finally dispersed the pro-Israel group - even though it had a permit from the city council to demonstrate."

Funny how so many anti-Israel(as an example, which could have been any non muslim group) protests in Europe are taking place in countries/cities with relatively large muslim/Arab populations.

While claiming to be the 'religion of peace', i never see any of them demonstrating against attacks(by 'Islamists') on civilians in Israel or ethnic Africans in Sudan, or Christians in E.Timor or Armenians in Turkey or Hindus in India or Budhists in Thailand or Russians or Sri Lankans or Australians in bali, etc... what do the victims of those attacks have in common ?(hint: civilian non-muslims).

On a related subject.... i spent some time this past week researching the population levels of religious minorities in the Muslim world. The only phrase that comes to mind is "ethnic cleansing", and i found no exception. But that's a different subject.

"Peace" without equality(economic/cultural/political) is an oxymoron and hypocritical as far as i'm concerned.
