Does anyone have an idea which processor will replace the current Dual 2.66GHz Xeon used in the MacPro? The current processor has been available for quite a long time already so I'm trying to decide if I should wait (I don't need it immediately) for the next update. I can wait a month or two.

Intel prices drop July 29th; I expect a Mac Pro update (3Ghz quad base, 2.33Ghz quad and 2.mumble/3Ghz octo options) around that time.

mduell, do you think there will be anything faster than 3Ghz? and do you think they will keep the same form factor?

There are no Core 2-based Xeons faster than 3 GHz, and the only ones available at 3 GHz have a higher TDP than the others. That is generally a sign that we're at the limit of what Intel will sell right now. Faster Xeons won't come until they have Penryn core by the end of the year.
Personally, I don't think that the form factor will change for a while yet.

Thanks Lateralus, for the TDP link...
Do you think P's analysis is correct...does approaching the TDP necessarily mean no more speed can be eeked out of a chip set through other means like more efficient threading (purported to be on board in Leopard)?

IMO there a lot more to tower throughput than just processor evolution, and there is plenty of room for fairly straightforward improvement in Mac Pro throughput right now. E.g. graphics, memory handling, etc.

Improving on a matured platform like the current Xeon processor is something very difficult so don't expect any radical speed enhancements this year.

I agree, we're not going to see 51xx and 53xx (Core 2 derivative) Xeons over 3Ghz until the new core revision comes out at the end of th eyear.

mduell, which processor will be the replacement for the current two dual core 2.66GHz, will it be the 2.33Ghz Quad?
