If I upgrade my Mac Mini to a Core 2 Duo cpu from the Core Solo do I have to reinstall OS X to take advantage of the 64 bit architecture?

Better question is, will a C2D work in a Core Solo Mac Mini?

Are all Intel C2Ds 64 bit by design/definition or is it they just happen to be that way? Perhaps the question is better asked if 64 bit can exist on a single core?

If this should be separate thread, please delete and I'll repost.

All Core 2 chips are 64 bit, regardless of the number of cores. Each core is 64 bit.

If it is the right kind of C2D, yes. IOW you need a socket M Merom: T5x00, T7200, T7400, and T7600.

64-bit refers to certain aspects of the chip being 64 bits wide. It has nothing to do with the presence or absence of cores. (A dual core chip isn't 64-bit because it contains two processors in one as if we're talking about 32+32=64 - those are two separate technical aspects. The Core Duo line that preceded the Core2 line was 32-bit even though those chips contained dual 32-bit processors.) Plus, the benefit you see from upgrading to Core2 is not likely to come from it being 64-bit, unless your tasks are highly data intensive and you're using 64-bit coded apps.

Art & BM,
Thanks to you both for the explanations. 'Twas smack on for my meager level of knowledge. Your time and expertise are appreciated!
