I just wanted to let you guys know that I upgraded my PowerBook 2400c (Comet) and Lucent WaveLAN PC Card with the AirPort 1.3 software.

Since the Installer still does not work on PowerBooks with an 802.11b PC Card (as opposed to AirPort built-in), you need to use TomeViewer to install the relevant files. I found it easiest to restart my Comet with the OS 9.1 base extension set and then simply drag the new extensions, libraries, control panels and control strip module to the system folder. (If you try to replace the various AirPort extensions while they are in use, you will not be able to overwrite them, thus the restart with the base extension set.)

Noteworthy for owners of pre-AirPort PowerBooks is that response of the card while surfing the web is noticeably faster and that the Lucent card now shows up as "AirPort PC Card" on the desktop.

Noteworthy for all users is that the update for the Base Station _finally_ makes it PPPoE compatible. The functionality is late, but better than never. Too bad I already bought a PPPoE compatible router to take care of the previous incompatibility.

Let's have a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook with AirPort and 5 hour battery life now!

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

Maybe results vary computer to computer, because I was able to successfully upgrade a Wallstreet which was using a Lucent Orinoco card...

All the better.

I guess it's worth it trying to use the Installer before resorting to TomeViewer. The installer didn't work on my Comet, which is of course one year older than the Wallstreet. It's very well possible that there is an incompatibility on my part or that Apple forgot to enable the installer for the PB 2400c because of its limited distribution.
