We "upgraded" to 5th edition, which is a vast improvement over 4 and 4.5, but I'm not entirely happy with it.

Gotcha!
I was being a literalist and assuming the "A" meant old-school flavor.
I'd love to play a 1st ed. RAW game, which I never did back in the day.

Simply getting kicked in the nuts is an upgrade from 4e. 5e seems like it's really just 2e with fixes. I wonder if they found the underwater combat rules that were conspicuously missing from the DMG.

The current line of games are a continuation of the original D&D box set. AD&D was an offshoot, and only had 2 editions, 2.5 if you count the Ultimate Cheese books as their own edition since they added so many new rules (and completely broke the game.)
I played for many years in a group that did 3d6 in order, no house rules game. It sure did make you appreciate any stat higher than a 9.

The big snowstorms last year we had a great multi-day campaign going... a friend was the DM and taught the kids (and me) the ropes. Now whenever the kids want to play it's like agh, got to set up character sheets again? because those sheets are lost forever.

Except if you count like that, there were two third editions, one in the early eighties and one in 2000. Counting lineage, it is probably more correct to refer to the one from 2000 as AD&D 3rd edition.
Whatever. Except for some time very long ago, my time with D&D has been on the computer, and at least there, 3.5e always worked best. Haven't seen any new good D&D games since Bioware and Obsidian lost the license.

The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Wat?
Basic was murdered. The 3 in 3e is because it's the successor to 2e.

Yeah, but he's nuts. It's not been AD&D for a while now, but we may just go back to our custom 1st edition rules, they may not be as fast paced but they cover more situations and fit like an old familiar glove. The only problem has been that those old books simply wear out, they were never intended to last almost 40 years. I have them all in PDF and use them on an iPad Pro, that may be the way for all of us in the group.

I had an epiphany my 1e house rules made a game resembling Basic more than 1e. Certainly for the first 10 levels.

This is wholly dependent on the type of game desired.
Gygaxian underground Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol with kleptomaniac elves? First edition.
Hickmanist everyone is a frustrated novelist? Basic.
Stealing the setting to use with a better system? Second edition.

I have a friend who wanted to try D&D because she has fond memories of her brother playing it as a kid, but upon further discussion it turns out she's way into the idea of a game based on the TV show Supernatural.
There's a licensed game I'm lukewarm about, but there's some new-fangled shit which is knocking my socks off. It's an offshoot of Apocalypse World called Monster of the Week.
The most in-your-face example of it taking a different approach than D&D is the GM doesn't roll dice. While I'll miss rolling, it's frigging brilliant. I'd just fudge the rolls anyway.

The group I game with is heavy into the "world" series of games. Usually Dungeon World.
The system only works with a GM who really understands how it's supposed to work and a group of players who are all on board.
The best part is that character generation takes about 5 minutes.
It takes a while to get used to the idea that you should only be rolling dice for something if it's really super important... because you can really screw things way up with a few bad roles.

I think I've got my head wrapped around it, though it's been a struggle dealing with some of the more alien ideas. The amount of player agency still freaks me out, but I'm warming up to it.
The character creation system blew me away. One of my favorite bits in the game is by the end of character creation you can solidly visualize the character, and it squeezes that out of three choices from three short lists.
Of course, character creation means character sheets, so I get to work out some of my graphic design frustrations.
I about 70% like it. At least it fulfilled my main goal of looking more like a prop and less like a character sheet.

Walked past my local Starbucks the other night, and there was a D20 game going on in there after close. I didn't see any books on the tables, but there weren't any iPads or tablets either. Paper and pencil char sheets. I should have stopped in and asked what they were playing. Perhaps I will.

Back in the day, if we were in the middle of a game, and say wanted to go to the diner to grab a bite, we'd take our character sheets, the half of the DM screen with the "to-hit" tables, and a calculator to be our random number generator (punch in a bunch of numbers quickly, then take the square root... keep going through the result from right to left until you get a number "in range").
I think we felt real dice would be too dorky.

"too dorky" is a pretty extreme statement coming from an active participant in this thread

Can't count how many times we played D&D at IHOP, with our books and dice. The waitresses there always expected us on Saturday nights after Rocky Horror (yeah, we did eat and tip, so they liked us), leaving after the sun came up. While we did get looks from normies who dined there, it was 2am, so there weren't many of them.

Yeah... when we would show up at the diner at 6:30 AM, it wasn't because we had decided to wake up bright and early.

Oftentimes we stayed long enough to eat 2 meals.

I'm sure we would have done that, but this place couldn't have been farther than 150' from my front door. The lure of returning to the couches was strong.

Everyone knows it was all about reading on the bus your original AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide with the huge demon on it, watching the old lady squirming in her seat as she glances fearfully at you.

We were able to do that only a couple times. My gaming group is personally responsible for several rules at our local Lyons restaurant:
Each individual must purchase at least one item.
Water is not an item you can "purchase for free."
Condiments are not items you can "purchase for free."
One person can not order a single item for everyone.
One table can not share a single beverage.
Beverages are limited to 2 free refills.
Creamer is to be use with coffee.
Creamer is not a beverage.
Patrons must leave after 1 hour.

We need to add to the list.
Waitresses may not be called "bar wench".
The fake plants are not "maneaters".
Dice are not a tip.
No Tomb of Horrors after 6 PM.
You may not pee on the floor to "detect sloping passages".
Dwarven women have beards. NO EXCEPTIONS.
