Yeah, Graphic Converter would probably get my vote ... very handy for web stuff, especially if you don't plan to buy/steal Photoshop Elements.

My 'must haves' are...
* Default Folder X
* WindowShade X
* FruitMenu
* GraphicConverter
* OmniOutliner

That's a little more than your budget but maybe Aunt Nellie's card/cash was just late

I have already got Snapz Pro, since it came withh my Powermac, and i've also got Photoshop 7, so Graphic Converter would be useless. Currently I think I will get MacReporter and Trasmit.

Proteus. On the forums I remember seeing things about features that will be disabled when Proteus reaches final stage. I also thought I read reggistration codes of Proteus will not expire, so when you like the product.... ?

iView Media Pro

A bit over your budget, but worth it if you have lots of media files.

It's actually a hard question. Most of the suggestions people have offered tend to be software that appeals to a rather narrow niche. If you don't chat a lot or need to organize media, then those are obviously poor choices.

My feeling is that funding Omniweb and Chimera is always a good thing. Beyond that I like Fetch best of the Mac FTP clients. If you need to FTP a lot I'd consider that. Probably next up would be Default Folder, although I admit I wish it functioned a little differently.

No. These ones are to be avoided the most in my opinion. This because:
- Chimera's author is working for Apple right now; it isn't so far away Chimera will be shipped with the OS for free, I guess.
- OmniWeb: I should wait before the rendering problems stop. It is far less commpatible then Chimera for instance. With Omniweb I have reported the incompatibility with the Netscape bar (money.com, cnn.com, netscape.com, etc) so much and they won't just even LOOK at it is my opinion. Is that 'support'?

And the thing about Proteus: if he chats much, it is a good choice I think.

Why would you want to avoid Chimera now, just because it might be bundled with a future OS version?
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Uh, Chimera is already free.

I kinda agree with you about OmniWeb, though.

Dude, I know it's a difficult concept to accept in our increasingly-capitalistic world, but Chimera is just plain free.

As in "open-source" ...

In the non graphic realm, WeathermanX is a dandy little program. 30 days free, then only $10. Fruit Menu rocks as well.

Isn't it even dual-licensed under the GPL? So it's free as in speech as well as in beer?

I think that you're right, although to be honest a full understanding of the nuances of software licensing is way beyond the capabilities of my poor, deteriorating brain. And where is this "free beer" of which you speak?

What about a good BAckUp software? It may not be shareware but I heard Retrospect was good. I think it retails for $50. May want to wait or check to see if it's compatible with 10.2.3.

With all that programming and webmaking I'd suggest Pop-Pop from Ambrosia software. Top notch Brickles-like game that doesn't get boring fast. Escape Velocity: Nova is another good choice.

My breaks are usually spent here. On that and Quake3, I guess. I wouldn't waste money on cheesy games, anyway.

You could send me $6 and use Nicer for as long as you like. Even though currently it's freeware anyway, I wouldn't mind a free beer (or two)!
