Anyone have a clue when it'll be available?

I want a new PM (just got a 23" Cinema HD and am running it off my PB 800) but I think I'll wait for the 9700 as it's *so* much faster than the 9000 (I have one for my PC, and it roXXors my boXXers).

Think I'll get a dual 1.25 with a 9700 as it'll be a lot faster for gaming than a dual 1.42 with a 9000 and cheaper to boot ;-)

Do you want to know what is even better for gaming? try a PS2 or an Xbox. $250 is way less than the price of a G4 - especially when you just want it for games.

Seriously, I'm not sure when it will be available, but I really want one, too. I'd say probably before the beginning of next month, maybe early March.

I don't think it will be available any time soon. The 9000 just became available.

I bought a GeForce 4Ti and love it. It should be a bit better than the 9700, but that's been open to discussion. The 4Ti is available today.

Well I talked to ATI at MacWorld, and they were saying something about April/DVI only but now that Apple lists it on the site as "coming soon" I was wondering if there were different info on the dates, and whether an ADC connector was going to be onthere.

The GF4 Ti is most definitely *not* better than the 9700. The 9700 will be 2x faster or more. I don't know what kind of GF4 Ti it is (4200, 4600) but the 9700 on the PC is *significantly* faster than either. Plus 2D on the ATIs is a lot better than on the Geforces. I know... I have a 9700 on my PC and it is an *excellent* card... one I'm willing to wait for over the GF4 Ti... if it's not ***TOO*** long :-D

Perhaps, but the Ti (is a 4600) is available now and nVidia will probably have something new out by the time this thing ships! Additionally, ATI has awful Mac drivers (some have been severe).

You're telling me that the 9700 will be 2x as fast as the Ti? I find that hard to believe. I did investigate this before I bougth the 4Ti and the consensus was that the 9700 might be a bit faster than the 4Ti, but may be forever until they actually ship the thing too.

If anyone cares, the Mac version is the entire front page of ATI's website now.

Me? It was a joke, which is why I smiled and then put "seriously." If you meant me, of course.

Yeah, but there's no mention of a retail version. I hope the retail version is out soon. The OEM models should be ready to go soon with 10.2.4 out now. Anyone think the retail card will be under $300?

Isn't the PC version still at $300? If anything I'd expect it to be more not less.

It's a shame that we are so far behind in terms of video cards. The new ATI cards will probably be out in the next 3-months with yet another GeWhatever 3-6 months after that.

Macs should be ahead of the PC in this department.

Radeon 9700 has been here for quite awhile, it costs about 220 dollars. Your thinking about the Radeon 9700 pro which is faster than a 9700 but costs about 60 dollars more.

Nvidia has already released it's latest graphic card the GeforceFx but performance is dissapointing, better than the Geforce 4s but generally inferior to the 9700. Nvidia has to get it's act together or it'll probably end up like 3dfx.

not to mention that their cards have that crazy leaf blower of a fan installed on that card. (great, now more stuff the g4noise people can complain about)

but, i hear they're planning on fixing it by the time it comes out.

I don't believe the 2x either, but the Radeon 9700 is definitely faster and better than the Geforce 4Ti. Nvidia's answer to the Radeon 9700 is the Geforce FX, which apparently isn't that much better than the Radeon 9700 from the rumors I hear. The model of the Geforce FX, that I saw on a web-site (it was a PC version ) had a big honking fan on it. If you think a PowerMac is noisy now, wait till you put one of these in it. The card also took up the PCI slot beside the AGP slot, due to the fan and fan 'shield'.

The GeForce 4Ti I have is silent, though there is a fan on it. The FX is insane though, it occupies a second PCI slot for the freakin fan!!!

You are right, I was thinking about the 9700 Pro. So we aren't even going to get the top of the line ATI card? At least not until it's 2-years old?

Some people were surprised that Nvidia even released the Fx since the performance isn't all that hot, it was so late, and their next generation card is apparently slated for maybe 6 months from now.

In any event, what I'm driving at here is we are consistently behind on the video cards now, and it seems rather goofy with all the creative types in the Mac market.

The BTO 9700 that Apple offers is the Pro.
