Jeez. Seems like every other topic is about replacing the video card. You should have known this when you bought it, iMacs (with the exception of the 1st generation iMac) are basically non-upgradable. The ONLY iMac that EVER had a third party video card was the 1st gen iMac, and it was an 8 meg voodoo2 called the gamewizard.

ANYWAY, if you have a DV, a flat panel, or whatever else comes next, no, you won't be able to get a new video card.

Lets hope people read this. For the people who actually ask this question are often new to the mac scene, and might glance over this sticky.

WTF are you guys doing? You can't make it Sticky by bumping it. Ask a moderator to do that.

If the moderater were worth anythign they'd have made this a permanent sticky in here by now anyways, so I took matters into my own hands. It seems like we get 2-3 posts a week about this topic, so I'm going to continue to bump this back up to the top.

AHEM.
The moderator decided that this wasn't that worthy of a sticky. Why you ask?
Because rather than it tell the basic information and nothing more, you had to use unnecessary language, like "you're screwed"

Do it right, make it simple and plain, I'll make it a sticky. otherwise, bump to your precious little heart's content.
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Perhaps a iMac FAQ sticky that tells which model iMac's are which, what can and can't be upgraded in them, etc.

I'd be happy to write one up....

This is ridiculous.

You don't need to bump the thread a couple of minutes after somebody replied...

Unless of course its more about bumping your thread count than bumping the the thread itself...

You forgot to mention the last generation of G3 iMac (Flower Power, Blue Dalmation, Indigo, Snow, and Graphite) that sported a slightly more meaty 16MB ATI Rage Pro 128 Ultra.

As this is an iMac and eMac forum, you could go on to detail G4 iMac and eMac upgradability, particulary drawing attention to that you can pretty much put any 5.25inch IDE Optical Drive in these machines, including a DVD Writer. Infact Apple's entire desktop line is Superdrive upgradable (obviously not including the now discontinued G3 iMac which may be still available brand new in some places).

Nice and neat! I used to have both Rev. A and Rev. D iMacs on my desk. Meanwhile, the Rev. D has a Rage Pro Turbo onboard video.

The "bump" thing is crazy and meaningless.

I don't think it has a rage pro turbo, I had a rev d mobo and it's the same 6 meg Rage Pro as the others.

FYI, the bump thing does have meaning. Every week we get somebody coming in here and posting about trying to upgrade their iMac video card. This thread prevents that. But we can't keep it on top unless we bump it.... or an admin would make one.

After a search
ATI Rage Pro Turbo
http://www.ati.com/companyinfo/press/1998/4144.html

http://www.applebits.com/imacs.html
iMac Rev. A: Rage IIc
iMac Rev. B - D: Rage Pro Turbo

Meanwhile, you bump the thread quite often.

-Why would you want to? A new iMac isn't that expensive anyway. I know my FP 800 has only a 32mb card and the new ones have 64. But what I want is an iMac with a 970 processor...

-Guess I'll have a while to wait then hmm....

Because there are all these noobs who buy an iMac (used or new), come to this forum, and say "Hey, I want better gaming, which card should I buy???"

Thats why this topic is here.

I told you, I'll make it a sticky when you can write it in a G-rated post, acceptable for all audiences.
