I'm still enjoying that thread about the biggest one hit wonder song and it got me to wondering if there's been any discussion about the most covered rock tune.

I tried to figure out what the most covered recorded song was and it was a big exercise. The best I could come up with was "Silent Night" with over 1,900 recorded covers of it. I thought sticking with rock tunes might be fun though.

So what is the most covered rock tune? I'm going to pick "Yesterday" by the Beatles. There were 638 recorded covers of it.

I think to validate this you need to post who did the covers. I can't think of anyone actually recording a cover of stairway. (bar bands and cover bands don't count, I think.)

great topic. Radio station had undercover weekend last wkend, and it was nice to hear fresh versions of good stuff.

Proud Mary (CCR)

Never been to a wedding that had a live band were this wasn't played. Gotta be the most covered.

"Yesterday" has been the acknowledged champ in this area for some time. I've heard there have been more than a thousand recorded versions of it, but the exact number is probably unknowable (unless you happen to own the rights to it).

If you consider live covers, I'm sure there have been hundreds of thousands of drunken versions of happy birthday...

Heh. Dread Zeppelin did a killer version of this (one of my favorite bands of all time)...they are technically a "cover" band, but they do/did do own material, and their covers are sufficiently bizarre to have their own creative merit...

As was mentioned, Yesterday has been unofficially named the most-covered song of all time.

Rolf Harris has covered 'Starway..', as have many others. I beleive that there has actually been an album of covers of 'Stairway...', all by different 'artists'

<google>
</google>

here you go

Not only that, it appears that Dolly Parton has done it too (here)

There are a lot of covers of Come Together by The Beatles - for example, Michael Jackson, The Bobs, Blues Traveler, and an alternative rock version (don't know the artist).

EDIT: Here is the Beatles page:

I heard sometimes ago on the radio that

"La vie en rose"

is one of the most covered, best version is done by this black lady with the BRICK haircut (also actress in on of the not so good "James Bond" films), dont recall her name right now. Ok, its not a REAL rock song though...

All along the Watchtower?

I know of at least three rock and roll giants who did it: Dylan, Hendrix, Mason.

Dylan wrote it. Dave Matthews and U2 have also covered 'Watchtower'.

Probably the Beatles for this one again. They are a band, of course, and not an artist.

I've read a number of times that "Yesterday" is the most covered in terms of recordings.

I've heard that "Never My Love" (The Association) is the most played song. I don't know if that means radio play or what.

According to the guiness book of world records, "The Long and Winding Road" is the most recorded song ever. 1000+ times by 1999.

Yesterday and Long and Winding Road aren't really "rock" songs though.

I'm surprised no-one's said Freebird yet. If I hear one more wanna-be band's cover version of that song...

Frank Zappa did a great "Stairway". I heard Dolly's version the other day on our local rock station - it was... interesting.
It looks just like a telefunken' U-47 - Zappa

That was the first song I thought of when I read this thread title. I was suprised as well.

Drunken Freebird is classic.

To my knowledge, there's only one song to be recorded by Dylan, Elvis, and the Beatles: That's Alright, Mama. Dylan's version was cut during the Freewheelin' sessions and may never have been released.
