Why does everyone talk about the PowerPC 970 @ around 1.2 GHz? According to several articles I've read from IBM, the starting speed is set at 1.8 GHz. It would be pretty sweet to see single|dual 2 GHz PPC 970 PowerMacs & PowerBooks showing up in a few months.

IBM makes PowerPC G3's that run at 1.9 GHz with a 200 MHz system bus and you don't see Apple using them in the iBooks.

Who knows until Apple releases them.

Apple hasn't even announced it will be using PPC970, let alone hinted at actual ship dates and in what machines it might be used, LET ALONE initial speed ratings and system configurations.

IBM's press material says that their "conservative" estimate has the PPC 970 topping out at 1.8 GHz when it's released in 2H 2003; lower-speed 970s are being talked about because even the most wild-eyed Mac fanatic can't imagine Apple pushing past 1.8 or 2.0 GHz for high-end desktops.

Not to mention that at 1.8 GHz, the PPC 970 draws 42W of power compared to around 20W for the G4s in the current PowerBooks. The 1.0 and 1.2 GHz PPC 970s draw much less power.

So good for PowerMacs, bad for PowerBooks.

As for the IBM PPC 970 being used with Apple computers, I think there's a good chance when all respectable sources eye it as a very high possibility (namely, IBM, Apple, CNET).
