University of Toronto is selling the stock dual G5 for CAD$3969 (vs. the $4199 at the Apple Store).

What are other Canadian institutions selling it for? And I wonder if the Canadians will get the educational price drop that the Americans are getting. I guess we shall see next week.

I'd really like to get a dual G5 2.5 for $3700 (plus upgrade cost to 9800 Pro) in 2004. 5 GHz of computin' goodness.

Simon Fraser University in Vancouver has, as far as I know the lowest Apple pricing in Canada. They currently list the dual G5's at 3799. Their powerbook pricing is also about $200 less than any other Uni in Canada.

In the UK, they have 'Standard Education' prices which offer a decent discount, and are available from most places, however if you are at a 'selected' institution, you get double the standard discount...

IKME's sole purpose in life it seems is to repeat this type of question in multiple threads...

Why will I buy a dual 2.5? Because the machine is going to get upgraded by the time I'm buying anyways. I don't want to buy today. However, if I could get a dual 2 then for cheap then maybe I'd buy one.

And, what do you NEED with 4 GHz in 2004 that you can't do with 1.6 GHz today (or even 2004) (since you're buying a dual too in 2004). It's not as if you do any video work at all.

Na you know what I use my computer for. Lots of print graphics which take forever on a single 733 G4 and even a dual 1.25 G4.

The only reason I am getting one next year is because I want a dual but can't afford it, so next year they will have a dual for less.

I am not thinking that 4ghz is not enough speed

Your personal video projects come once a year so what is with this always needed the fastest everything and "I will get it when...."

That is why I keep asking

The University of Calgary Micro Store has the Power Mac G5/2000DP at $3928.10.

I also wonder why SFU has such low pricing...

Do you have dual hard drives? I'd suggest getting dual hard drives, but ones with ultra-fast transfer rates and seeks, along with tons of RAM.

It also depends on what you're doing with the print graphics, because a dual 1.25 would be slower than a single 1.6 under many situations. Indeed, a dual 1.25 might not even be that much faster than a single 1.25 in some situations. One of the BIG problems of the dual 1.25 is that it's extremely bandwidth starved, not to mention the fact that many apps don't properly take advantage of the two processors, even under OS X.

Your personal video projects come once a year so what is with this always needed the fastest everything and "I will get it when...."
The reason I like speed (even though I don't usually use all that speed) is because when it comes to the few times I actually use it, the lack of speed in older computers makes me want to rip my hair out. Fortunately, I can expense a portion of it. Otherwise I'd probably just buy a single 1.8 or equivalent.

As for the delay I'm a little apprehensive about this rev. A G5. Plus since I don't foresee getting a DV cam until next year or so, I can wait. (My personal video projects have been with a DVD-RAM cam, which is not ideal with Macs.) Plus, I don't want to pay again for Panther.

BTW, as of today, the U of T price is still the same.

University of Western Ontario is at $3999, but our campus computer store is TERRIBLE. I'd actually rather buy my stuff at a Compucentre just NOT to support them.

You can get those prices now directly from the Apple.ca store, provided you give them a valid student number or employee number. The prices should be pretty standard across the board now (though some stores arestill higher).

I can confirm the $3799 CDN price at the University of Alberta Microstore. It's a shame... earlier, they had it at $3639 (although I suspect that it was a typo of $3939...).

A new benchmarking utility, from the folks who brought you dockclock, the clock on the dock: http://www.dckcck.com .....

Simultaneous porn movies/background:

G4 733<14.57396

Extrapolating with some enhanced calculations taking into account industry largest front side bus with dual processors.

The 2Ghz Machine would perform thusly:

G 5 2 x 2.0 Ghz = 5 billion porno movies at double play rate.

10 billion porno movies. 10 billion sailors trying to bursting through air.

G5 fo' life, thugstyle.

Benchmarks that mean something, about time hufufuf..

+ =
There is no emoticon for what I am feeling!

My system specs:

2 furry caches
17" diaganol quad pumped weener
198 lb ham
44x36x57 CWR
overpriced, underperforming, but sleek nonetheless.

I also have a G4.

SFU (or UA, UT or any of the other stores selling at that price) aren't getting any kind of special deal; that's the standard Apple Educational Purchase Program (EPP) price. EPP is what the apple.ca/education store sells at, and a lot of schools are meeting that price.

I just spoke to the guy at my University computer store and asked them about their high prices...he looked them up online when I said I could get a dual for 3799 at any other university and he informed me that according to the website, the prices were actually LOWER than that now...I think he said the dual was 3579 and the single 1.6 was now 2349 or some such.

Can anyone confirm? Apple Canada Education still lists them as 3799 and 2499, so I'm not sure what he was looking at.

Could he have been looking at departmental pricing or something?

In fact, is there a departmental pricing that's different from the usual educational pricing? In the past they were different, but with the new price list I just see one price.

I'm pretty sure he was quoting you cost (doh!). Apple maintains two separate streams of stores; there's one for end-users and there's a reseller store. He was most likely looking at his university's reseller store.

You should try to hold him to that price!

There isn't separate pricing for departments (although Apple does often negoaite special pricing for large orders and Canadian Funds for Innovation (CFI) grant purchases).
