What is the best anime theme song you have have heard from a series, or movie?

For me it would have to be Noir.

hmm, best theme song: Probably the one for Witch Hunter Robin. The song is Shell by Bana.

Second best is probably the theme song for Escaflowne.

My third favorite is the one for Twelve Kingdoms (Junni Kokki or however it's spelt).

Best anime movie soundtrack is Spirity Away (Sen to Chichiro, again, however it's spelt).

Anything by Hayao Miyazaki (especially Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke). Also Outlaw star is good, and definitely Cowboy Bebop. Oh, the American DragonBall Z soundtracks are pretty good too...

She's derivative, a regular Japanese John Williams, but I have to admit that I like a lot of stuff by Yoko Kanno.

Highlights include:
  • Information High from Macross Plus
  • The Real Folk Blues from Cowboy Bebop
  • Run Rabbit Junk from Ghost in the Shell, Stand Alone Complex

Not to mention her work on Escaflowne, et al.

Watch for vocals by Gabriela Robin, it's Kanno's 'stage' name.

I also love a bunch of the vocals by Akino Arai. She's done work on Witch Hunter Robin, Outlaw Star, and Macross Plus.

Just about all of the Noir soundtrack by Yuki Kajiura is great, too.

Cloud Age Symphony, the opening theme for Last Exile, has grown on me, too.

Please teacher!

I dunno why it seems like anime OVA's themes are no longer being translated into english. Like Tenchi Universe or Ranma.
What's the deal?

Hellsing Rocks, I like the ending theme to FLCL. Tenchi Universe was the first series I watched religiously. The beginning theme (english version) gave me goose bumps. Classic Sailor Moon has a lot of nastalgia for me...*sigh* younger days...

How do the Japanese do it?! How?! The songs are either totally awesome or mind numbingly annoying. What is cool is that they do either on purpose. There are no "ok" or "so-so" themes - at least not in my opinion.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Cowboy Bebop
FLCLs whole soundtrack rocks. (Pillows Pillows Pillows! )
Witch Hunter Robin

Oh, and translated? you mean Dubbed or Subbed? I personaly think dubing the songs would be horrible...

Bingo. Although the DragonBall Z songs get cheesy real fast.

Does anyone know if there's a CD of the Cowboy Bebop songs? They're fudging great.

Heh, Cowboy Bebop music doesn't suck.

For me, it would have to be Cowboy Bebop's theme, "Tank!"

Hayao Miyazaki is an animator. J. Hisaishi is the composer that has done the soundtracks for most of, if not all of, Miyazaki's movies. (Have 3 of the soundtracks here).

Cowboy Bebop's theme "Tank!" is good. Especially the remix. Yoko Kanno's work is usually quite good.

What, no one liked "Lum no Love Song" from Urusei Yatsura?

Anyway, I enjoyed the theme from Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo, "Russian Roulette" from the Dirty Pair TV series (man, that takes me back), Jungle Wa Itsumo Hale Nochi Guu, Hajime no Ippo, "Believe" from Gundam Seed, "Men of Destiny" from Gundam 0083, "I Love U" from Full Moon wo Sagashite, and the theme from Full Metal Panic. The opening from the second El Hazard OAV series was good too, though that was a crappy follow up to such a good OAV. "Koi Wo Suru Tabi Ni" from Nurse Angel Ririka was good, but I never saw the series and I doubt I'd want to.

The best theme ever though would be "Tatakae! Otaking!" from Otaku no Video. Truly the best theme -- and anime -- ever.

The worst would probably to "Crest of the Stars." It's practically BGM.

no no no no

title goes to Ranma 1/2!!!!!!!
There are at least a half-dozen Ranma openings, and likely more. Could you be a little more precise?

Theme song to Neon Genesis Evangelion. I know all the word in japanese
Yeah, but how the hell many bad mixes of "Fly Me to the Moon" did they have to record?

Whoops, my bad (I knew that didn't sound right...) I just searched on google and copied the wrong name.

"Tank!" is great, but I don't think I've heard the remix... link?

It's on the Love Hina Volume 3 DVD.

Or you can (probably) hear the full version if you buy the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack.

Which one? There was at least one -sometimes two- for each season.

I'm partial to the three Slayers (TV series) openings myself, plus Love Hina. Then there's Initial D (original, please, not that "tricked-out" junk), Ai Yori Aoshi, and to a lesser extent (though not by much), Saiyuki. And let us never forget Wei Kreuz (known as Knight Hunters in the US due to licensing issues).

Then there's the dark-horse candidate, Gravitation. I mean, come on; the series is about the J-Pop industry, of course it's going to have good music.

I suppose it depends on your point of view. I take it you don't like much J-Pop?

However, I do suggest you take a listen, anyway. The song's title is "Super Drive"; unfortunately I don't know the artist at the moment.

I second the vote for Shell - cracking tune, and also easy to play, as a bonus

Don't know if it's properly an anime theme song, but - among many others - I quite liked the Daitarn 3 (maybe it's only the Italian version, not sure) signature melody...

Well, here's two entries for the "Strictly Shouldn't really count" category...

"Du, Du, Du, Duh, Der, Der, De, Der, Der , Durr dur , dur dur... Haough!" Yes, the tune from the old Manga Trailer spots was one fine piece of crappy thrashy nonsense by some crappy thrashy band. We used to use it in our band sometimes when we felt cheesy.

(Okay, maybe once more, "Du, Du, Du, Duh, Der, Der, De, Der, Der , Durr dur , dur dur... Haough!" - satisfied?)

And number two, Battle Royale - Japanese, Violent, Cool, Schoolkids, but alas, not actually animated - which kinda excludes it from the rules - but still, the best atmospheric use of popular Classical music I've ever seen.
Hark, I hear a robin sig'ing in the trees!
Nae, there is no sog to be sug,

Also, let us not forget Revolutionary Girl Utena, which also takes third-place for best fight BGM ever.

What beats it? Noir takes second-place, and the winner -in one of the biggest upsets in BGM history- would have to go to the English dub of Sailor Moon. Yes, it is to weep, but take a listen for yourselves before judging. It may be the dub's one redeeming feature.

So it was Russian what I was hearing! I thought "Ya znaya nachala shto ya zdelelya", "Mne holodna"... I just wasn't sure because of the distortion on her voice, and the very fact that I thought it was supposed to be Japanese.

Those lyrics sound suspiciously like a Земфира song.

[edit]
I think the song I was thinking of was "∞" from четырнадцать недель тишины (an excellent album) in which those lyrics are not heard, but there are a couple lines which sounds similar.

Might also have been "Сигареты" off Прости меня моя любовь. Which also doesn't have those lyrics.

Oh well, guess I was wrong.
