Changing a users short name in Panther?

Alright, basically when I fist reg'd the system I accidently put the last name field in wrong for a friend and now although I have changed the user, the short name doesnt change. I know that you cant change it that easily, but I also know it can be done. I feel comfortable with OS X, so I can dig deep and get dirty. Can someone please post some directions? I searched mac help and the forums and couldnt find anything (pertaining to this and the idea that I am now using panther).

These instructions worked for me the other day:

The only thing is NetINfo said I didn't have permission to change my name under the admin group by the time I got to step 10, so I did that using the Accounts panel of System Preferences.
