I cannot get my HP Photosmart 7550 to work with Panther. I am using driver version 5.5 for the printer, downloaded from HP.

Pulling up the print option in programs sometimes crashes the program, and when I can manage to hit the print button without a crash nothing happens. When I open up the printer via the Printer Setup Utility it says that the jobs are stopped. However, after re-starting the jobs, they change to stopped again.

Is anyone else having the same problem? Any ideas on what might solve it?

Thanks,

JVB

Are you that Apple didn't supply you with the proper driver when you loaded the Panther HP drivers. I use the Deskjet 5650 and the driver was a piece of crap. That is until I loaded Panther. The driver that came with 10.3 is a huge improvement over whats available on HP's website.

I did a erase and install installation of Panther. I then made sure I installed the HP drivers that Apple provided on disc 2. After the installation I launched the Printer Setup Utility and selected USB. My HP 7550 was in the list under USB, but it said "Driver not installed" next to it. I then downloaded and installed the 5.5 drivers from HP and have had no success. Printing either crashes the application I am trying to print from or just plain fails to print.

Try using the Photosmart 2.0.5 driver, located off HP's website:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/softwar..._X_205.sit.bin

Thats what HP Tech support got me to do.
It'll show up under hp imaging and connectivity

I also deleted my
/Library/Printers
folder
and my preferences that had "Print" in them
in my /Library/Preferences
/Users/usernamehere/Library/Preferences
also
I deleted
/Users/usernamehere/Library/Printers

worked for me!
don't forget the disk repair

Thanks. I removed the HP folder from my Library/Printers folder and downloaded the drivers from the link that you provided. My 7550 is now working under Panther.

You also mentioned disk repair? What are you referring to?

Thanks,

In /Applications/Utilities
there is a program called "Disk Utility"

If you select your main partition, and goto the tab which says "First Aid"

You will see a button in blue that says
"Repair Disk Permissions"

This is a great tool and will restore any permissions that are out of sync with the original installer.

Great job apple for making such an awesome utility!

I am sad to report that unfortunately the above solution did not get my photosmart 7350 printer working.

Does anyone have a 7350 that they have gotten working in Panther?

did you upgrade panther? or did you do a fresh install?
If you've upgraded, you may have some other problems.

Actually 2.0.5 does get a 7350 working in Panther

I found some detailed instructions on macintouch (http://www.macintouch.com/panreader08.html) that got it working. The instructions there could be greatly simplified, especially w/ terminal instructions to do the same thing, anyway.. the thing that I did different was the restart mentioned in those instructions that I had not done before.

In essence they are the same thing as mentioned above but in a bit more detail.

seann,
your advice worked for me, and I have a 7350. Thanks! The only bug I see so far is when I do two sided printing it cannot do side to side binding, no matter what binding setting I choose, it always does top binding. Still, a step in the right direction.

Seann,
Hmm...maybe I'll try the 5.5 driver they have posted on their web site and see if this helps- I didn't have any trouble with the 2.0.5 driver and double sided printing in Jag.

it downloads the 2.3.5 driver, which really hurt.
A lot of my applications were crashing if I didn't run them as the root user.

I'd keep a copy of the 2.0.5 just incase!
Let me know how it goes!

I tried the 2.3.5 installed from the 5.5 install utility, things do crash at times, also tried it network-wise, plugging the printer into my Airport station, that doesn't even recognize 2 sided printing

HP should dump their stupid PC business and concentrate on their imaging stuff. Oh well, back to 2.0.5 for the meantime...

Well, since betas of Panther have been available since this summer, I would have hoped that they would be on the ball. Weird that 2 sided printing would be the only thing that's broke under Panther, and that the newer drivers, released in Sept, would be even more broke!

We suffer, we suffer in silence!

Question: When you put a photocard in the 7550, does it show up on your desktop? I'm running 10.2, and I cannot access the image cards from my digital camera... the only way I can use them is if I reboot into OS9.

No, only the newer photosmarts using the 2.3.6 driver have the ability in 10.2 and 10.3 to have a disk image.
