Sure, perhaps this belongs in peripherals, but this predominatly applies to PB owners.

Does anyone have experience with the PCMCIA GPS modules on powerbooks / Mac OS X?

I came across this site that details some information on using PCMCIA and GPS on the Mac.

There has been scant information on MacNN. Now that there are more maps being released for the Mac again this seems like it might be promising time to pick up one of these doodads.

I think I'm just going to go with a USB device like the TripNav TN-200. The bluetooth modules available are nice, but six hours of battery life and $300 for the unit?

Oh, that's nice to see that there are now USB evices available. I was getting tired of seeing new GPS units come out with serial.

But I'm actually talking about the GPS modules that plug directly into the PCMCIA slot. Many of these do not require an external power source.

Thanks for the info though!

The USB device does not require a power source either.

I know what you were asking about, but so far all of the solutions that I have seen involve getting a compactflash GPS for a PDA and connecting it to a compactflash -> PC Card adapter, plugging it all into the PCMCIA slot and crossing your fingers. And it's going to be a more costly solution by far.

Also, the TripNav USB device has a magnet that you can stick to your car to get better reception if you plan on using it inside a vehicle. And it's a lot cheaper.

I was just presenting an alternative with known drivers that work.

That looks pretty nice. And the price is right, too. What mapping software do you plan to use with that?
